Rifle's girls had quite the weekend, holding their opponents to a combined 33 points in a pair of wins.
On Jan. 28, the Bears beat visiting Grand Valley, 38-16. A night earlier, Rifle picked up a 49-17 win at Cedaredge.
“Our defense is doing well,” Bears coach Stephanie Heald said. “We put in a new defense this week, and it helped a lot.”
Heald said her team installed a new matchup zone, and the early returns are promising.
“It's really confusing [for other teams],” she said. “Sometimes it looks like a zone. Sometimes it looks like man.”
Against Grand Valley, Joey Kuheim and Tani Jorgenson poured in 10 points apiece. Kuheim also ripped down 13 rebounds. Ashley Rickstrew contributed with 10 boards.
On Jan. 27, the Bears kept Cedaredge off the board in the first quarter and were led in scoring by Kuheim, who finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.
Rickstrew chipped in with eight points, Taylor Walters seven and Kailee Cordova had six.
With the weekend wins, Rifle improved to 12-2 overall and to 7-1 in the 3A WSL.

Rifle boys split contests
Trever Smith scored 23 points to lead Grand Valley to a 41-40 win at Rifle on Jan. 28.Chris McGruder added nine points for the Cardinals, who improved to 9-5 overall and to 5-3 in the 3A WSL.
Grand Valley trailed 9-4 after a quarter, 20-17 at halftime and 30-25 after three quarters before netting 16 points in the fourth to escape Rifle with the victory.
The loss dipped the Bears to 5-9 overall and to 4-4 in league play.
On Jan. 27, Rifle recorded a 69-63 win at Cedaredge behind 15 points from Jake Statler and 12 from Triston Quigley. Tanner Quick and Tanner Rust finished with nine apiece and Jacob Withee scored seven.
Rifle wrestlers fall in dual at Palisade
Rifle's wrestling team had a rough go of it at Palisade in a Tuesday dual, losing to the Bulldogs, 62-7.Picking up wins for the visiting Bears were 113-pounder Rogelio Navarro and 145-pounder Hugo Ruelas.
Navarro defeated Palisade's Kyauna Martinez by decision, 2-0. Ruelas scored a win by major decision over Lonnie LaRue, 14-3.
