CARBONDALE — Rifle girls basketball coach Stephanie Heald knew the shots would fall eventually.
After shooting at a 5-of-34 clip in the first half, the Bears caught fire in the second, running away with a 49-30 win at Roaring Fork on Jan. 20.
At halftime, Heald told her team to keep shooting. Rifle went into the break with a 20-17 lead.
“You've got to keep shooting for your shots to go,” the coach said. “I have confidence in them.”
And rightfully so.
The Bears came out firing in the second quarter, putting up 25 points on 10-of-20 shooting in the third quarter to take a 45-28 lead.
“Our shots were just falling,” said Rifle senior Ashley Rickstrew, who finished with a game-high 20 points. “We were working as a team, looking for the open spaces.”
The Bears (10-2, 5-1) took care of the rest with defense in the fourth quarter, holding the Rams to just a pair of free throws.
Joey Kuheim finished with 11 points and 14 rebounds for Rifle, which is off until a trip to Cedaredge on Friday.
“We've finally got some rest time,” Heald said with a smile. “We'll take the weekend off, get back to conditioning on Monday and then back to work on Tuesday.”
Bear's suffer loss to Rams
Roaring Fork's 6-foot-5 Trae Moxley erupted for 27 points and nine rebounds on Jan. 20, helping the Rams to 56-43 boys basketball win over the visiting Rifle Bears.
The Rams jumped out to a 17-13 lead after a quarter. They extended that advantage to 31-21 at halftime.
Rifle crept to within five at 38-33 late in the third quarter, but a 3-pointer by Roaring Fork guard Clay Gross with 37 seconds left pushed the Bears into a 41-33 deficit going into the fourth.
Though Rifle hung around in the early stages of the final frame, the Rams (5-5 overall, 3-2 in the 3A Western Slope League) put the game away at the foul line in the fourth.
Roaring Fork could have been more efficient at the line late. It hit just 50 percent of its free throws (9-for-18) in the final frame, sinking just enough to keep the Bears at bay.
Tanner Quick led Rifle (4-8, 3-3) with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Triston Quigley chipped in with nine points.
