PARACHUTE — Four Garfield School District 16 teachers received Teacher of the Year awards for their hard work and dedication.
Nominees were chosen from the elementary, intermediate, middle and high school level.
The four teachers who received the awards were first-grade teacher Beckey Sirus at Bea Underwood Elementary School, fifth-grade Math and Science teacher Lorile Loesch at St. John Elementary, sixth-grade Social Studies teacher Alissa Branson at Grand Valley Middle School, and Science, Health, and Physical Education teacher Kim Whalen at Grand Valley High School.
Along with the “Teacher of the Year” title, each teacher received a golden apple award and $1,000 at a special awards ceremony April 8 at the Grand Valley Middle School in Parachute.
In addition, District 16 Superintendent Dr. Ken Haptonstall presented $6,000 to be equally distributed to each of the winner's schools. The principal and the recipient of the award will allocate the funds for special programs at their respective schools.
During the event, students from district schools provided entertainment under the direction of district music teachers Matthew Callaghan, Van Merritt, and Barbara Carroll. The program included the St. John Elementary School Soaring Raptor Choir, the Grand Valley Middle School Glee Club and Instrumental Ensemble, and music students from Grand Valley High School.
E.J. Rivet, president of the Grand Valley Educational Foundation, acted as master of ceremonies at the awards dinner and gave a short summary of the efforts and contributions of the foundation during the past year. Rivet also shared the foundation's mission, which is to improve the quality of education by enhancing the learning opportunities for students and teachers within Garfield County School District No. 16 through increased community awareness and support.
A special recognition was given to the donors and other individuals who had assisted in implementing the goals of the foundation during the past year. Rivet recognized Roy Brubacker, who was unable to attend, for having initiated the program several years ago.
District 16 Board of Education members Sarah Del Orona, Cheri Witt-Brown, Allison Bell, and Dora King were present. Others from Administration who attended included district 16 Director of Business Services Rose Belden, and Sherrie Hoffman.
Principals in attendance were Rebecca Ruland, Kathy Keeling, Jory Sorensen, and Ryan Frink. Brian Berg was unable to attend.
The Grand Valley Educational Foundation organized and sponsored the evening. Foundation board members include E. J. Rivet, Linda Levine, Nancy Jay, Susan Hoover, BJ Lindauer, Cheri Witt-Brown, and Ann Arrington.
