National night out
The Rifle Police Department would like to invite you to join us Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the Art Dague Pool for our National Night Out celebration. The focus of this event is to provide the community with helpful crime prevention information and allow the public an opportunity to interact with Rifle Police Officers in a fun and entertaining way. Hot dogs and drinks will be provided. Officer Duncan and the newest member of the Rifle Police Department, “Tulo”, will conduct K-9 demonstrations. Meet with School Resource Officer Marantino and see how our new Simulated Impaired Driving Experience (SIDNE) car works.
Bring a raft and leisurely float in the pool as you watch Finding Nemo on the big screen. The movie will begin as soon a the sun is down. A voluntary canned food donation will gladly be accepted on behalf of Lift-Up at the pool entrance. Bring your family, your swimsuits, a raft and a canned food item to this year's National Night Out with the Rifle Police Department. Contact Officer Wilson with questions at 970-665-6500.
“Remembering When”
On Tuesday, Aug. 3, at noon, the Rifle Fire Protection District will host a free, 60-minute presentation on fire and fall prevention called Remembering When. The presentation will be held at the Rifle Senior Center, 50 Ute Ave in Rifle. All senior citizens are welcome to attend.Each year, approximately 7,000 older adults, age 65 and older, die as a result of home falls, and an additional 1,000 die in their homes from fires and burns. The Rifle Fire Protection responds to numerous fall emergencies each year.
The Remembering When program, developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), teaches older adults to protect themselves from fires and falls through trivia quizzes, humor, and nostalgic interactive games. The focus is fun, but the safety messages are serious. The presentation will include a hands-on smoke alarm demonstration and door prizes.

Carnage in Carbondale
The Roaring Fork High School team will host a scrimmage against the Rifle Bears Friday, July 30 at 7 p.m., at Roaring Fork High School football field in Carbondale. There will be prizes for winners in races. The first 10 kids, ages 5-17 to arrive, will receive a free vuvuzela. Gates open at 6:15 p.m. tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-17, 4 years-old and under are free.
Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction
Rifle Future Farmers of America (FFA) is hosting a Spaghetti Dinner and Silent auction on Friday, July 30 at 6 p.m. at the Garfield County Fairgrounds to benefit Jake Bullock, who is battling cancer. Cost if $5 per plate, or $25 per family.
Sheriff's Auxiliary annual golf tournament
The Garfield County Sheriff's Auxiliary is holding their 10th annual golf tournament on Aug. 29 at the Battlement Mesa Golf Course.The tournament is a scramble and is limited to 100 players on a first come, first served basis. Early registration is recommended. Cost is $90 per person which includes golf and cart, cap, dinner, and trophies. Berthod Motors is offering a 2010 Buick LaCrosse to any player who gets a hole-in-one on hole 13.
Funds go to support the Garfield County Sheriff's Auxiliary in Battlement Mesa and the various programs they are involved with.

Pool closing early
The Art Dague Pool will be closing early this year on August 15, for the 2010 season. In years past the pool has remained open until after Labor Day but with the recession and cuts to the city's 2010 budget, the Parks and Recreation department decided to close the pool early as a cost saving measure.
Food Drive
At the WestFest Music Event (Aug. 13-15) this year we are collecting non-perishable food items to give to the Food Bank of Rifle, supported by Grace Life Church. You can deposit non-perishable food items in a box at the ticket gate.
Encana is 4-H sponsor
As Garfield County gears up to celebrate “How the West Was Fun”, Colorado 4-H prepares to commemorate 100 years of supporting the development of the heads, hearts, hands and health of the state's youth. This year, Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. will participate as the fair's official “4-H 100 Year Celebration Sponsor.”4-H events are time-honored traditions at the Garfield County Fair. 4-H youth from around the county prepare for months to participate in general projects, livestock shows and sale. These events are an opportunity for members to showcase the skills they have developed through their 4-H programs.
"4-H is an organization dedicated to helping Colorado youth grow into strong, confident future leaders" said Sher Long, stakeholder relations advisor for Encana. "We are excited to see 100 more years of 4-H."
In 1910, 4-H clubs met for the first time in Colorado. Originally established with a strong foundation in agricultural education programs, 4-H has grown to include a range of focus areas, including healthy living, science, engineering and technology. The Garfield County Fair will take place August 4 -7 at the Garfield County Fairgrounds. The fair will feature the annual livestock show and sale, general projects, open class exhibits, and rodeo, as well as many exciting new events, including a Rocky Mountain Bull Bash (PBR), talent contest, chicken hut exhibit, kayak pool, rock climbing wall and ball drop. Softball Camp
The Rifle Grand Slam Softball Camp will be held Aug. 9-13 at Deerfield Park in Rifle.The five-day camp will be from 5-7 p.m. and is for players in grades 7 - 12. Registration before Aug. 1 is $60, after that date a late registration fee of $75 will be charged.
Registration can be done at Rifle Recreation Department located at 202 Railroad Avenue in Rifle.
Sandoval Fun 4 all fundraiser
The Sandoval Fun 4 All fundraiser will be held at the V.A. Park in Silt on Friday, Aug. 13, show begins at 5 p.m., and continues Saturday and Sunday with local bands, open mic, karaoke and solos, throughout the event.The event is to help raise funds to help Mrs. Sandovals who lost her son Lonnie Sandoval recently, and then had her house burn down in Nov. 2009. This particular event is designed to help our community make money for Sandoval's, and others', needs while reaching a much needed goal for someone that has suffered loss.
Sunday morning there will be an encouraging word from the Pastor of New Hope Church.
Paul Taylor has offered to prepare three pigs with all the proceeds going to the Sandoval family.
Organizers are still looking for some volunteers and others to help out at the event. They are looking for someone to help out with pork processing costs by Old West Meat & Processing, at $ 2.85 a lb. Organizers still need to raise $1400.00 for special event insurance, lighting for the park, port-a- potties, two dumpsters, ice machines, Emergency Medical Technicians or Ambulance, food prepared for the bands for Saturday and Sunday, silent auction gifts, three canopies.
They are also looking for vendors who will pay a one-time fee of $100 for this event, as well at 10 percent of total sales. All proceeds go to the Sandoval family.
C.S.I will handle the security for the three day event. Rivers Restaurant has offered to help feed the bands for 1 day.

Rick Price and Blackwood Legacy
The Nashville-based “Blackwood Legacy” Contemporary Southern Gospel group will be in concert on Friday, July 30, 7 p.m., at the Rocky Mountain Baptist Church in Rifle. Admission is free and a love offering will be received. The Blackwood Legacy is led by Rick Price is a veteran Southern Gospel entertainer with more than 30 years in the industry, including many years as the lead singer for the Grammy and Dove awarding-winning Blackwood Brothers Quartet, with whom he was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
Price has gathered some of the most talented and sought-after new artists on the scene today to create a dynamic concert that features favorites such as Beulah Land and How Great Thou Art, as well as music made popular by today's most recognized worship artists.
