June is here and gardening season is rolling along. Here are a few gardening tidbits for the season

Q. What's your favorite thing to plant? Annuals they are a quick long lasting color for the whole summer and you can change them up the next year.

Q. What's your favorite vegetable? Tomatoes, there is nothing like a fresh tomato from the garden in the middle of summer.

Q. What's your favorite flowers? Stargazer lilies and sterling sliver roses are my absolute favorites but that comes from when I was in floral design. For my own garden I like clematis and wisteria.

Q. How has this unique spring weather effected your planting?

It has me holding off on what goes out and when. I just planted my vegetable garden and it got hit with some late frost. So I'm like everyone else just putting things in and crossing my fingers.

Q. Is it too late in the season to plant certain things? Unless we are talking veggies it is never to late to plant anything, we can plant tree, shrubs and perennials from first thaw to first hard freeze. It is all about the water. It is a little late to plant your broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, and cauliflower but you can get the lettuce and spinach in again in late August early September.

Q. What's your secret weapon for a great garden? Buying locally grown plants. I don't shop at the chain stores I buy from my local growers so I know what I plant will live here. Plus I use a lot of mulch to cut back on the watering.

Q. Any special tips for weed control? Get the weed fabric down in the shrub beds when you plant and keep up on the mulch otherwise weed are part of gardening.

Q. What do you most enjoy about gardening? Watching my son pick the fresh veggies and strawberries that I've planted for him. It is a great way to spend time with him that gives the whole family something to enjoy.

Q. Perennials or annuals? I grow both but tend to lean towards perennials over annuals I like to put it in and forget about it and perennials allow you to do that.

Q. What's the most challenging plant or flower to grow? That's a hard one as the company grower I grow a lot of different things so I deal with all sorts of challenges. I think the hardest thing to grow from start to finish is different for everyone for me it is coneflowers getting the perfect temperatures and moisture is a huge challenge.

Q. Do you ever stop and smell the roses? I try to but as anyone that knows me can tell you the smelling part is hard when you can't smell the plants you work with anymore. After many years of doing this I no longer can tell you how good a plant smells, but I do take time to spend with my family and friends.
