In just about six months, residents of Rifle can expect to see a brand new 30,000 square foot, two-story library that will be located in the new Civic Plaza in the old parking lot east of Rifle City Hall.
After years of planning, the new building is taking shape on East Avenue behind Rifle City Hall and is still on schedule to open its doors in November. The 30,000 square-foot, two-story facility is slated to include a meeting room capable of seating 150 people; a children's area and Storytime room; private study rooms; a Colorado history room with a hearth and a teen area.
And now is the time to make contributions to not only help out the library, but for naming opportunities and memorials. The library is accepting donations that will allow for upgrades to the facility, with the size of the donation determining the type of recognition available.
“We want to give people the opportunity to give if they want to,” said Amelia Shelley, executive director of the Garfield County Public Library District. “So far (donations) have been a little slow, but it's not a big surprise, given the economy.”
Donations can range from $250 for a panel on the historic Rifle photo mural; $300 for the Roosevelt Window restoration; $1,170 for an exterior bench; $2,000 for the display case in the Colorado Room; $2,500 each for a wooden bench in the entry; $5,000 for naming rights in one of the three study rooms; $5,000 for the small business Center for computers and software and $10,000 for naming rights.
“This is only a small sample of the types and costs of donor opportunities offered to make this library a place the entire community will cherish,” Shelley said.
EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) has already contributed $56,000 for two boilers in the Rifle library and one in Parachute. The entire cost of construction of the new library in what is being called the “Civic Plaza” is $9.2 million, funded by property taxes approved by voters in 2006 and a $1.7 million grant from the Department of Local Affairs.
Donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of it goes directly to benefit the library.
“The new facility will benefit our community in countless ways,” said Pat Owen, secretary for Friends of the Rifle Library. “For many years, the space provided by the old building was inadequate for Rifle's population. Now there will be increase space, not only for the print collection, but also for computer facilities and the many other services a modern library provides.”
The library is temporarily located at 139 West Third Street and the hours remain the same from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
