You can't lose real estate broker Cheryl Chandler in this valley.
She's lived throughout the valley from Basalt to Battlement Mesa in everything from a trailer to a ranch and currently owns Cheryl & Co. real estate company downtown Rifle where she sells and manages property from Parachute to Aspen.
The office at 120 W. Fifth St. was formerly the longtime location of a health food store. Chandler, who has been a licensed real estate agent since 1991, opened her business in 2007.
Born in Minnesota, she lived in California before moving to Breckenridge, where she met her husband, Norm, a cowboy from Rifle. The couple currently live on 2.5 acres on Silt Mesa.
“We'd been in (the health food store) buying vitamins and I said to my husband, why don't we buy this building? This would be a great real estate office,” Chandler said.
Along with a new coat of paint and sign on the exterior, the interior has also been completely renovated.
The office is manned by five women — all managing brokers.
“It's the girl's club,” Chandler joked.
Cheryl & Co. also has a satellite office in New Castle that is not staffed, but is available to give buyers the convenience of filling out paperwork there if they don't wish to travel to Rifle.
Right now, the real estate business is still a buyer's market, according to Chandler.
“Last year it was down, but now it's getting stable and will gradually move up,” she said. “In the last month, it's come back from January last year in the west end of the valley. We had six closings in January 2009 and 10 closings in January 2010.”
Along with selling real estate up and down the valley, Cheryl & Co. now also does property management, doing background and credit checks, collecting rents and overseeing maintenance of the properties.
“It's not a renter's market,” Chandler said. “In Parachute, we had 12 houses for rent and rented eight of them in one day.”
When she's not selling or managing real estate, Chandler is very involved in giving back to the community.
She is in her 18th year as vice chair of the Garfield County Planning Commission, is past chair of the Silt Area Chamber of Commerce, vice-president elect for the Colorado Association of Realtors Mountain District and a member of CARHOF, an affordable housing organization in Colorado.
And giving back to the community is something she requires of all of her staff.
“It's only right,” Chandler said earnestly. “If you don't give back, you don't deserve to get anything. The community has been good to me and people have to give back to the community. My employees have to give back — it's part of the office policy.”
From trailers to mansions between Parachute and Carbondale, Cheryl & Co. knows its way around the valley.
“Our specialty is from trailers in trailer parks to $6 million homes and property management,” she said. “I know this valley pretty darn good. You can't lose me here.”
