RIFLE — Todd Malloy has been interested in brewing beer since he was a teenager using a home brew kit his father had given him for his birthday.

“Actually, I was more reading about it than actually brewing it,” Malloy said with a smile. “And my neighbor was Dean Liotta, owner of the Hubcap Brewery and Kitchen at Crossroads. I'd go into the Hubcap and see the big shiny vessels. It really inspired me.”

But when he graduated and went to college, the Vail native began brewing beer in earnest. Then with a degree in business, he took a job with the Glenwood Canyon Brewing Co. in Glenwood Springs, where he worked for six years.

By the time he left, he knew all about brewing techniques and the mechanical techniques. He next moved to California where he worked for a large regional brewery, Firestone Walker Brewing Co.

And it was over the Internet that he hooked up with a former owner of the Sammy's on Park Avenue and the two began brewing plans to open the city's only brew pub.

The current active owner of Sammy's, Shaun Brainard, paired with Malloy to open the Rifle Brewing Co. in partnership with Sammy's on Park Avenue.

Brainard, who has lived in Rifle since 2000, took over as owner of Sammy's in fall 2009.

“But the menu is the same as it always was,” Brainard said. “It's still fine dining with things like prime rib, steak, lobster tails and a full bar.”

The Rifle Brewing Co. began serving its brew in November 2009. They brew several different types of ale in-house, including Rifle Creek India Pale Ale, Black Sunday Porter, Boomtown Blonde Ale and Anvil Point Amber.

The names given to the brews are a collaborative effort between Malloy, Brainard, general manager Dan Currie, head chef Darrell Fenno and the staff.

“The beer names are generated by staff input,” Brainard said. “It's a team culmination.”

“We all play a huge part in developing the portfolio,” Malloy added.

The brews are served in 16-ounce pints for $4 a piece or you can purchase a “sampler” that contains six five-ounce samples for $6.50. The brews are also available in “growlers” — half-gallon jugs — to go for $13, which includes a $2 deposit. The growlers may then be returned for a refill for $11 a pop.

Regular business hours for Sammy's and the Rifle Brewing Co. are 5-10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sunday. Reservations are not required but are encouraged by calling 625-8008.

New company joins with Sammy's on Park Avenue to offer local brews

The Rifle Brewing Co. and Sammy's On Park Avenue will hold a grand opening on Friday, Feb. 12, and Saturday, Feb. 13, with a kickoff at 5 p.m. both evenings. The new brewpub is the only one in RIfle and between Glenwood Springs and Palisade.

Brewmaster Todd Malloy has perfected the beers in the last several months and is ready to serve them to the people of Rifle and beyond. Along with their house brewed ales, there will be several other specialty beers on tap for the opening. The festivities will include half-priced pints, door prizes and great giveaways.

Normally, closed on Sundays, Sammy's On Park Avenue will be open on Valentine's Day, Sunday, Feb. 14, beginning at 5 p.m. Reservations are required by calling 625-8008.
