RIFLE — Nicole Glammeyer of Rifle, a sophomore at Rifle High School, wants to go to Australia to be a student ambassador for the worldwide People to People organization.
People to People Ambassador programs offer life-changing, education travel experience to students, athletes, educators and professionals. With nearly 50 years of experience, more than 400,000 alumni have traveled to destinations on seven continents, making it the world's most recognized educational travel provider, according to the group's website.
The mission of the organization is to “bridge cultural and political borders through education and exchange, making the world a better place for future generations.”
An active 4-H and FFA (Future Farmers of America) member, Glammeyer was nominated by her 4-H leaders and teachers and was invited to come to an interview in October in front of a panel from People to People. She was accepted as an ambassador in November.
However, there's that little issue of money. Glammeyer needs to raise more than $7,200 for the 17-day trip, which will encompass five destinations, including Cairns, Darwin, Canberra and Sydney, where the group of 40 students will meet with government officials, tour the city's opera house and complete community service projects such as picking noxious weeds. But they'll also watch the behavior of dolphins and might even swim with them.
Prior to the trip, the ambassadors have to complete research projects, take classes and complete community service projects.
In the meantime, Nicole has been fundraising since November, doing bake sales, gift wrapping and selling candles.
“She's raised a little more than $2,000,” said her mother, Tammie Glammeyer. “But they leave at the end of June or beginning of July.
Her next planned fundraiser is a “Get Your Goat,” in which she starts at a business with a goat in tow and for a donation, they can get the goat to go away or for a bigger donation, they can decide where the goat should go from there. For an even bigger donation, they can purchase insurance to make certain that the goat does not come back.
“We would like to have the first (visit) as a donation of their choice, the next for $50 they can pick where it goes, and for $100, they can guarantee the goat does not come back to them,” Tammie Glammeyer said.
Nicole also plans to do Miniature Hereford Bingo, hopefully on spring break in March. Another fundraising dinner and silent auction is planned at the Miner's Claim Restaurant in Silt, although the plans have not yet been finalized.
People to People was started by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. According to the organization, Eisenhower was acting on his firm belief that direct interaction between ordinary citizens around the world can promote cultural understanding and world peace.
“I have long believed, as have many before me, that peaceful relations between nations require mutual respect between individuals,” Eisenhower is quoted as saying.
People to People has also seen the support of other presidents, including a number who have served as honorary chairman of People to People International, including John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, Gerald R. Ford, Ronald Reagan. George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton and George W. Bush.
Those wishing to make a donation to Nicole's effort to be an ambassador from Rifle can send a donation in her name to 27653 Highway 6 #1605, Rifle, CO 81650, or call 625-3427.
