Melinda Smith of Rifle began a workout routine at The Rock Family Fitness in south Rifle as part of a New Year's resolution.

“I want to be able to wear a bikini this summer,” Smith said with a laugh.

She's working out on a Saturday morning with her friend Theresa Fontenette of Rifle, who has been a member of the gym for the past three years, but has resolved to make it a routine.

The women are like many other people who vow to start the year exercising regularly, losing weight and getting healthy. And the owners of The Rock Family Fitness say they see it at the beginning of every year when memberships swell.

“This week we doubled what we usually do,” said Bridget Dean, who owns and operates the facility with her husband, Andrew. “I signed up over 10 new members. That's usually what I do in a month.”

Dean says she believes that people have overeaten during the holidays and feeling a little pudgy and want to lose the extra weight.

“Right now the parking lot is full, but we'll lose some by the end of February,” Dean said.

Others will actually keep their resolutions and find that they enjoy the people and the healthy atmosphere.

“People love coming here. It's an incredible place — it's like being at home,” Dean said.

Along with the weight and cardio machines, The Rock has free weights and offers classes, karate, circuit training, yoga and tanning.

Memberships are available by daily passes, punch passes, by the week, the month or on a yearly contract.

For those who prefer to workout at home to achieve their exercise goals, Sears in south Rifle sells home gym equipment.

“We carry elliptical treadmills, recumbent bikes and iFit cards, an exercise chip that goes into your treadmill and acts as your own personal trainer,” said Diane Schuler, lead salesperson at Sears. “It's an exercise program that tells you what to do, how fast to do it and monitoring your heart rate.”

Like gym memberships, Schuler said the store sees an increase in the sales of exercise equipment in the winter months.

“Mostly because it's too cold to be outside,” she said.

The best-selling pieces of equipment are the ellipticals, in which you stand with each foot on a panel and pedal. Some of them are stationary and some move back and forth.

“It's almost like a cross-country workout,” Schuler said.

The recumbent bikes in which you are sitting and pedaling are also popular. If a piece of equipment isn't available at the showroom, Sears can order it for you.

Prices for home gym equipment range from $450 to $1,000.

Whether your resolution to get in shape includes a fitness club or a home gym, the key is to find a routine that you can stick to.

“You need to make a New Year's resolution you can stick with so you can be consistent and not something that is out of your reach,” Dean advised. “Consistency is the key to weight loss, weight training or anything.”
