IN RIFLE: Business

Rifle insurance agency offers it all

Whether it's auto, home, health, life or even insurance for the oil and gas industry, the Nichols Insurance Agency in downtown Rifle has it all.

Owner Susan Nichols-Alvis, an agent for Farmer's Union Insurance, has operated the agency for the past six and one-half years.

“I can insure anybody and anything,” Nichols said.

Born and raised in Washington State, Nichols moved to western Colorado 10 years ago to be closer to her family, who live in Grand Junction. She has lived in Rifle for more than seven years.

With 20 years of customer service experience and 15 years in sales, she says got into the insurance business through her mother, who is also an agent. Nichols says what she loves about the business is the interaction with people and being involved in the community.

“There's definitely never a dull moment,” she said with a smile. “But in this economy, people are insuring less or reducing their coverage. Nationwide the insurance business is down about 20 to 30 percent. In this economy, my goal this year is to help people save money — whether it be packaging or looking at different markets.”

Her clientele is mainly from western Colorado and a lot is done through referrals and word of mouth.

When she isn't working at her business at 201 W. Third St., Nichols is out and about in the community. She and her husband, Dan Alvis, started an ATV club called White River Trail Runners that now has more than 40 members. Nichols serves as the club's secretary. The couple also love to camp and are members of the Hi-Country 4X4, a four-wheeling club in Glenwood Springs. Nichols serves as the Rifle Lions Club secretary and is an active Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce member.

Nichols describes her insurance agency as a business that uses “an old-fashioned work ethic, family-oriented with an open-door style.” Along with daytime hours during the week, the agency is also open on evenings and weekends by appointment.

Farmer's Union Insurance was established in 1951 and is one of the largest insurance brokerages in the West, operating from New Mexico to Montana and Texas as well as in the Midwest.
