GarCo LIFT-UP bracing for holiday season of helping

The folks at LIFT-UP of Garfield County are “battening down the hatches” in preparation for the holiday season and the anticipated requests that will be made for Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets as well as Christmas Angel Tree gifts.

Deadline to sign up for the holiday food baskets and Angel Tree gifts is Friday, Nov. 13.

With the downturn in the economy that started last fall, the organization isn't quite sure what to expect during this year's holiday season.

“We're battening down the hatches and bracing ourselves,” said Mike Powell, executive director of LIFT-UP of Garfield County. “We're kind of braced for it, but whether or not it will materialize, we don't know.”

So far, 250 families in Rifle have already signed up for the food baskets since registration began on Oct. 26, according to Jeffrene Fowler, services manager for the Rifle LIFT-UP office.

And there are still two more weeks left to go.

“Last year we had about 250-300 altogether,” Fowler said. “I think it's the economy, and I think that people are moving downvalley from Carbondale and Glenwood Springs.”

LIFT-UP (Life Interfaith Team on Unemployment and Poverty) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing essential humanitarian assistance to communities from Carbondale to Parachute. The organization provides emergency food, thrift store and gasoline vouchers, bus passes, the Extended Table soup kitchen and referrals to other human service agencies.

Daily food services have already seen a significant increase.

“We did 115 families in Carbondale just last week,” Powell said.

Donations of Thanksgiving food are being accepted now through Nov. 23.

“We need things like canned fruit, Jello or pudding, canned vegetables, cranberries, pumpkin, yams, pie crust or roll mix, cake mix, beans and rice,” Fowler said.

And, throughout the year, monetary gifts are always welcomed. Money is also good because as a nonprofit organization, LIFT-UP can buy food products cheaper than regular consumers.

Recipients of the Thanksgiving food baskets will get the basics for a traditional holiday meal that includes a meat voucher from City Market.

In Rifle, which also services Silt residents, there are no qualifications to be eligible for a holiday food basket. But you must register in the community in which you live.

Those wishing to make nonperishable food donations can do so at a LIFT-UP location in their community. The Rifle LIFT-UP office at 800 Railroad Ave., is open from 9 a.m. to noon, and 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Monetary donations may be sent to LIFT-UP, P.O. Box 1213, Glenwood Springs, CO 81601.
