Penny working for you

Rifle Parks and Recreation wants your input! We have partnered with the Rifle Economic Development Corporation (REDC) to conduct a needs survey of park facilities and recreation programs. Surveys will be sent out to all residents and businesses with an 81650 ZIP code in the month of November. Electronic surveys, which can be e-mailed back, will also be available on the city's website at www.rifleco.org. They are all due back on Nov. 30.

The survey will consist of two parts. For those that completed the needs survey in 2004, you may recognize many of the same questions in the first part of this year's survey. In 2004, this survey helped identify the wants and needs of the community and formulate the program for the one-cent sales tax. We will be comparing results to see how the community feels we have been doing since the passage of the tax in 2005.

The second part of the survey focuses on the Health & Wellness Center (Community Recreation Center), which the REDC continues to move forward with. The REDC is reviewing the project plans to ensure the most needed amenities are built and the budget for the center is manageable. One of the questions asks respondents to design their own center limiting the amount of amenities by square footage. This is a challenge, as not everything one may want will fit into the center.

Once results are tabulated, they will be shared with everyone. We plan on posting the results on the web and hold a community meeting to review the results.

One thing to note is that the one-cent sales tax was not intended to construct a Health & Wellness Center. It may be used to help cover the costs of operations and maintenance of the center, but it would not be able to pay off a construction bond at the same time.

If you would be interested in helping the REDC with the Health & Wellness Center, please contact them directly at (970) 625-4202 or rhwc@rifleedc.com.

The 2004 survey gave the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) it's marching orders. The parks and recreation strategic plan was also based off of these results. This year's survey results will continue to guide the PRAB and the REDC for years to come. Please take a few moments of your time to complete the survey and help us plan the future of parks and recreation in our community.
