Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture John Stulp has named Steve Bornmann, of Thornton, as the Colorado Department of Agriculture's Inspection & Consumer Services (ICS) division director.
“The Inspection & Consumer Services Division is the hub of our consumer protection programs, and Steve has the experience and dedication to help protect Colorado consumers,” Stulp said. “He has been a great asset to the department, and I'm pleased he has accepted this position.”
Bornmann, 50, has been employed by CDA since 1987 and has served as the Technical Services Section Chief within ICS since 2006. He began his duties as ICS Division Director on Monday, Nov. 2.
“The services within the ICS division touch every Colorado citizen, and I consider it an honor to serve the state in this capacity,” Bornmann said. “Consumers' rights must be protected, and I have a passion to promote and safeguard those goals set forth within our program.”
The primary goals within ICS include consumer protection, promoting of equity in the marketplace, and animal and human health safety through a number of programs administered by CDA:
• Anhydrous Ammonia Safety — ensure that this fertilizer product is stored, transported and used by agricultural producers in a safe manner.
• Biochemistry Laboratory — provides analysis on human and animal food, fertilizers, soil, vegetation and water.
• Compost — regulates compost that is distributed in Colorado.
• Eggs — licenses and inspects egg dealers.
• Farm products — regulates businesses that purchase and store agriculture products.
• Feed — regulates products fed to pets and animals that are produced for human consumption and is part of a nationwide effort to help ensure the safety of meat, milk and eggs.
• Fertilizer — regulates fertilizers, soil conditioners and plant amendments sold in Colorado for agricultural and home use. Product labels and advertisement are monitored for false or misleading statements.
• Inspections — inspects and investigates a variety of subjects including eggs, price verification, feed, fertilizer, packaging and labeling and small scales.
• Meat-Custom Processing — inspects custom processing facility that process domestic livestock and/or wild game animals for the animal's owners.
• Measurement standards — inspects scales and other measuring devices, price verification (scanner) systems, and packages for net quantity and labeling.
• Metrology Laboratory — is the custodian of the official weights and measures standards for Colorado, and provides metrology services to top government and private industry customers. All services provided are directly traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
