Voters in the Garfield Re-2 School District will vote on two school district directors in a coordinated election on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 that also includes a proposed mill levy increase for the Grand River Hospital District and allowing the Silt Water Conservancy District the ability to collect, retain and spend revenues.
Two candidates are vying for a four-year term for the director seat in District E, New Castle, which was vacated by Ann Guettler when she resigned after her term expired. A write-in candidate is seeking the four-year term in District A in Rifle.
Elyse Hutchinson was appointed to the position and is now seeking to retain the position. Dr. Lee. E. Krauth is also seeking election to the director position.
The following are questions asked of both candidates:
District E
Elyse Hutchinson
Age: 40
Occupation: Graphic designer
Years in Garfield County: 11 years, 9 in New Castle and 2 in Silt.
Past experience in public service: Past PTAC president, but never an elected position.
Children in school: One in second grade at Kathryn Senor Elementary and one in fifth grade at Riverside Middle School.
Reason for running: I've always been involved in the schools with my kids and (the board) approached me. I want to continue in the position and help to oversee the district and get parents and the community involved.
Biggest issue you see facing the district: I think raising the kids' CSAP scores should be our primary focus. Also, teacher satisfaction. A happy teacher is a better teacher.

Lee. E. Krauth
Age: 59
Occupation: Neurosurgeon for the past 30 years, currently working at Grand River Hospital in Rifle.
Years in Garfield County: Grew up in New Castle where I attended first through eighth grades. Attended the Air Force Academny in Colorado Springs and then Duke Medical School.
Past experience in public service: I've never had any before, but I never had the time. Now I have the time and the energy.
Children in school: I have four older children and a second-grader at Elk Creek Elementary.
Reason for running: I'm disappointed in the school system right now. We've lost the focus on education and I think we need to get back to basics.
Biggest issue you see facing the district: We need to prepare our children for college or other opportunities, whether it be small business, ranches or farms. They need to know basic math skills and how to balance a check book and earn a living. I love sports — sports are good. But if you can't read, you don't have the tools to make a living. It's about discipline and respect. We need to give our children every opportunity to achieve whatever they want to achieve.
District A
Brad Moss of Rifle was the only person to turn in paperwork for the write-in position of Re-2 director for District A in Rifle. The deadline to file paperwork for the write-in position was in August. Moss was unavailable for comment at press time.
The ballots for the election have already been mailed and are due back to the Garfield County Clerk and Recorder, 109 8th Street, Suite 200 in Glenwood Springs by 7 p.m. on Nov. 3.
