July 3

Kids' Fourth of July Parade

The annual free kid's Fourth of July parade put on by the Rifle Recreation Department will start at 9:30 a.m. at Rifle City Hall, 202 Railroad Avenue on Friday, July 3. Children of all ages are welcomed! Decorate your bikes, big wheels, skateboards and scooters. The parade will run from city hall to Heinze Park, where there will be games like shoe scramble, watermelon-seed spitting and a three-legged race. Fun for the whole family! Parents should walk along the street with young children. If you would like to have a float in the parade, call and register with Rifle Recreation at 625-2151.

July 4

Rifle Gap State Park picnic

“What's on the menu for the Fourth of July Picnic?” is the topic at Rifle Gap State Park (swim beach) from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. Read a tale by Joanna Cole, “The Magic School Bus Gets Eaten,” (a book about food chains.) Work with the park naturalist to learn about the varied fish species that inhabit Rifle Gap. Use your creativity to paint a new species on your own!

Holiday closures

All libraries in the Garfield County Public Library system will be closed on Saturday, July 4. The West Garfield County Landfill will be closed on Independence Day and reopen on Sunday, July 5 at 9 a.m. Regular hours are seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Banks and post offices will also be closed for the federal holiday.

July 6

Operations Space Vacation Bible School

Children kindergarten through 6th grade are invited to attend Operation Space Vacation Bible School on Monday-Friday mornings beginning on July 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at Apple Tree Park in New Castle. Dress for outside weather/sunscreen. Songs, crafts, games, goodies and dramas will help them as they have a ‘close encounter” with God's Word. BBQ Rib contest

BBQer's are needed for the “Baby Back Rib Cookoff” at this year's Burning Mountain Festival in New Castle July 17-18 at Burning Mountain Park. New Castle Hogback Hustle 5K

Volunteers are needed from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 11 to man the course, register runners and support the runners at the annual Hogback Hustle 5K in New Castle. Contact Bryan or Hannah at New Castle Recreation to sign up, 984-3352.

Manga Komic Course at NC library

Stop by the New Castle Branch Library at 4 p.m. on Mondays through July 20 and take part in the Manga Komic Course. Learn hot to make a one-shot comic or simply refine the skills you have in a friendly and creative environment. Fore more information, call 984-2346.

Help Rifle Animal Shelter

The Friends of the Rifle Animal Shelter are asking people to go to their home page and vote for them every day in the Animal Rescue Site Challenge. A southwestern pottery class is being held through May 28. at Colorado Mountain College's West Garfield County Campus. (For more information or to register, call the campus at 3695 Airport Road in Rifle at 625-1871.

Parachute news

Centennial publication now available

The Grand Valley/Parachute Centennial Publication books are now available at Parachute Town Hall. The booklet is rich in history and makes for exciting reading for residents and non-residents alike. Your first copy is free; any additional ones are $3 each.

Looking for work?

The Colorado Workforce Center in Rifle and Glenwood Springs post current job listings each week. Registration can be done online at www.yourworkforcecenter.com or contact your local workforce center. The Rifle Workforce Center is located at 310 W. Third Street, 625-5627. The Glenwood Springs Workforce Center is at the Glenwood Springs Mall, 945-8638. Both offices are closed from noon to 1 p.m. and on holidays.

Storytime at the Rifle Branch Library

Preschool storytimes at the Rifle Branch Library are at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The library is located at 107 E. Second Street. For more information, contact Amy at 625-3471 or visit www.garfieldlibraries.org.

Food Bank

Food Bank through Rifle Christian Fellowship Church is now open from 10 to 11 a.m. on Mondays and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays at the Rifle Christian Fellowship, 1252 East 7th Street in Rifle. Anyone with a need can use the food bank once a week. No financial needed and it is open to the public. 625-2306.

Valley Senior Center

Join the seniors at Valley Senior Center at 11:30 a.m. each Wednesday for a delicious luncheon. Enjoy conversation with neighbors, meet new friends and learn what's happening in the Parachute community. The food is prepared by the Rifle Senior Center. The Valley Senior Center is located at 540 N. Parachute Avenue in north Parachute. For reservations, call 285-7216 from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays. Everyone is welcome for bingo at 7 p.m. every Saturday with soft drinks and snacks.

Sunday Celebration

Rifle Christian Fellowship, 1252 East 7th Street in Rifle holds a Sunday celebration at 10 a.m.; Impact Youth Meeting at 7 p.m. and Sunday Brunch at 11:30 a.m. every first Sunday of the month. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Come hear a message that will lift your heart, spirit and life.
