An old-fashioned ice cream social, a car show and a 50’s and 60’s sock hop dance will kick off this year’s 13th annual Rifle Rendezvous Festival from Friday evening through Sunday, May 15-17, at the Garfield County Fairgrounds.

And it will be James Julian’s first event as the president of the Rifle Rendezvous Committee.

“There will be a carnival, and things like belly dancers and Mexican dancers and music by the Mark Clark Band from Denver and the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs Band,” Julian said. “If you don’t like something - wait a half hour - it’ll be different. We have a lot of different entertainers.”

There is no charge for any of the entertainment.

Along with a variety of music, the Rendezvous, which focuses on an Old West theme, will have a variety of food and business vendors and exhibitors. Saturday’s events will include a Rockin’ Little Wranglers Ranch where kids can learn arts and crafts while experiencing the Rendezvous; a Wild West Outhouse Race in which local businesses compete; and a Cowboy Feast on Saturday evening by Cowboy Joe’s Catering.

The Rendezvous will wrap up with a pancake breakfast by the Lion’s Club for a nominal fee, preaching and testimonials by local churches and a free lunch.

Julian is looking forward to the festival, which he fell in love with when he and his family moved to Rifle two years ago. A 16-year-employee with Shell Oil, he left Antioch, California - a city of 100,000 in the Bay Area, to raise his family in Rifle.

“This is the town I’ve been looking for most of my adult life,” he said.

The Rendezvous festival was also the first event Julian attended after moving to Rifle, which he says “captured his heart” and prompted him to take the reins after longtime Rendezvous resident, Judy Hewitt, stepped down after last year’s event.

“It was a little touch-and-go there for awhile if Rendezvous would even happen again,” Julian said. “With the economy in a downturn, all the negativity and depression, I really felt this is the type of activity Rifle needs to have and it needs to go forward.”

His main goal is to see that everyone has a good time.

“I just want everyone to have fun and with this way things are, this can get their minds off of it. Just come out and have a good time.”
