It was more than 20 years ago when local business owner Dee McCown became involved in the Vivien Raymond Golf Tournament through the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce.
At the time, she started as a volunteer, helping out with the tournament which is celebrating its 30-year anniversary this weekend.
The first year she participated in the tournament in 1988, McCown did not golf, but she did meet Sharon Church, who had recently moved to Rifle. The two sat at a hole on the golf course where they were spotting balls and McCown was telling Church about all the people she knew at the tournament.
However, she didn't realize that she'd forgotten to turn off her microphone while watching one of the players as she announced that "whoever that was, has really good-looking legs."
Neither did the women know what was in store for them.
"Little did we know that she would become the executive director (of the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce) and I would be a golfer," McCown said with a laugh.
However, for the past 10 years, McCown has been involved in the tournament as a player and has played as a team with her husband, Larry, and another Rifle couple Harold and Judy Banks.
"We've played the last five years together," McCown said.
Do they ever win?
"Oh gosh, no," McCown smiled. "We're terrible. We get the 'Caboose Award' for the worst team and the most strokes. I'll never that the coveted plaque on my wall."
The winners at the tournament this Saturday May 8, at the Rifle Creek Golf Course in north Rifle will receive a cash prize and a traveling trophy.
But it's not all about the winning.
"For everybody out there, it's just a really good time," McCown said. "And it's a good way to make business connections."
Annick Pruett, executive director of the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce, agrees.
"It's a great way to network and it's a fundraiser for the chamber," she said. "It's open to the public - it's not just a chamber event."
The 30-year-old golf tournament is in honor of Vivien Raymond, a golfer and longtime member of the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce.
"She started this she was very much into golfing and the chamber," Pruett said. "
The event is sponsored by Weiss & Associates and Commonwealth Title, both of Rifle.
If anyone is lucky enough to shoot a hole-in-one, they can win a car from Elk Mountain Motors in Glenwood Springs.
Cost of the tournament is $65 per person, which includes a cart, green fees and lunch.
