RIFLE, COLO. - Larry and Barbara Harlin couldn’t fit all the prizes they won in the 12th annual Holly Days Celebration in their little car to take back home to Cedaredge.

The couple won the $2,600 grand prize raffled off at the end of the Saturday, Dec. 13 event, organized by the Citizen Telegram.

“She (his wife) was real excited” when the numbers on the ticket drawn from thousands were announced by Keith Lambert, Larry Harlin said. “I thought someone else had won at first.”

The first ticket drawn was number 13043, but that ticket holder did not come forward, and since the rules required ticket holders to be present to win, the Harlin’s ticket was drawn next.

They purchased a stock trailer at Rifle Truck and Trailer, so were given a large amount of tickets and told to show up in case they won anything. Along with the grand prize, the Harlins won a poinsettia and $25 gift certificate from Rifle Garden Center.

Since they don’t have any children - or, naturally, grandchildren - much of the grand prize such as board games, a doll and the like, will probably be donated to an organization like Toys for Tots, the couple said.

One thing will likely get a new home in Cedaredge, though.

“I think we’ll take the rocking chair,” Barbara Harlin said.

Holly Days involves participating retail merchants who offer their customers a raffle ticket for every $10 they spend in those businesses. Based on the number of sold tickets, the event helped generate an estimated $270,000 in sales to participating merchants.

Prior to the raffle, Girl Scout troops passed out already-purchased tickets from Jean’s Printing and Choice Liquors that were originally intended for needy families. However, due to a lack of family names, the tickets were distributed to event participants.

Before Holly Days, the Parade of Lights saw 17 brightly-decorated floats go from West 3rd Street down Railroad Avenue to the Garfield County Fairgrounds, where the Holly Days event was held.

Those who filled the indoor arena were pleased.

“It’s a good way to get together over the holidays,” said Paul Samuelson of Silt Mesa, a first-time Holly Days participant. “I had a good bowl of chili” sold by Girl Scouts Service Unit 608.

The best thing Jo Diaz of Rifle liked was “seeing old friends.”

But it was the raffle and giveaways that Brandon Clouse of Parachute liked best.

“This is the fourth time we’ve come,” he said. “The parade was pretty cool for the kids.”

The parade floats were also the best part for Debbie Wilson of Silt. Her favorite was the “911” float by the Garfield County Emergency Communications Authority.
