RIFLE, COLORADO - With Thanksgiving right around the corner, people start to look for something to give gratitude to and ways they can help others.
Rifle, Colorado's Boy Scout Troop 223 has held an annual food drive since 2003, when Eagle Scout Wade LaCount first suggested the idea. Every year, they go door to door to hand out fliers and come back to those doors the next week to collect the food that people are generous enough to donate.
The generosity of some people is truly staggering, especially when you are standing in a room filled wall to wall with donated canned goods.
Our food drive shows the boys that community service is important, said Scoutmaster Jake Jacobs. Its good for them to participate in something larger than themselves.
This year, the boys left over 1,000 fliers on doors throughout Rifle on Nov. 8. Most of the troop showed up, willing to help. They made fast work of it, and were done handing out fliers within a few hours.
The Boy Scouts will go back to those doors to collect the food on Saturday, Nov. 11. There will also be a food drop-off point at the Elks Lodge 2195, Troop 223s sponsor, for anyone out of town on the day the food will be collected.
When the food has all been assembled, most of it will be donated to LIFT-UP, where it will be given away. A portion of the food is also given to the food bank at the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
It feels good to know that Im helping people in the community that are less fortunate than me, said Seth Green, a long-time member of Troop 223.
The Boy Scouts would like to thank all the people that have donated in the past, and all the people that plan to donate this year.
Peoples generosity really can make a difference, said Travis Ketelsleger of Troop 223.
So can the hard work of a few caring Boy Scouts.
