• Nov. 8: The Grand Valley/Parachute Kiwanis Club will conduct their 20th annual community-wide food drive in Parachute and Battlement Mesa. All the food is donated to the food pantry at LIFT UP in Parachute. Collecting boxes and cans of non-perishable food items, volunteers will sweep neighborhoods starting at 10 a.m. Items suggested for donation are all types of canned goods, cereal, dry and evaporated milk, coffee, boxed potatoes, jelly, stuffing, pancake mix, syrup, Hamburger Helper, pasta, cake mixes, frosting, pie filling, cranberry sauce, gelatin and puddings.

• Nov. 9: Kelly-Hansen Post #78 of Rifle will conduct a flag disposal ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial in Rifle at 2 p.m. to properly dispose of unserviceable flags. If you have a flag that is worn out and tattered, you may drop it off at either the Silt or Rifle Fire Departments, the Citizen Telegram office at 133 W. 3rd St. in Rifle, or give it to any member of the Legion. • Nov. 14: In honor of National Adoption Day on Nov. 15, Garfield County will host a Foster Care and Adoption Celebration at the Glenwood Springs Community Center from 2-5 p.m. This event will honor adoptive families as well as provide information for people interested in foster care and adoption. Adoptive parents, caseworkers and attorneys will be present to answer questions and there will be fun activities for kids and door prizes.

• Animal Rescue Foundation is a volunteer group in the Roaring Fork Valley that works to save the lives of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that are abandoned, abused, surrendered or face euthanasia because of overcrowded shelters. The group has no shelter, so they plan and attend events throughout the valley to find homes for the pets. The group also holds fundraisers to help pay for boarding costs and medical expenses. • Deadline July 1, 2009 Masterpieces of Colorado Tour will fund a dance tour that celebrates Colorado’s unique cultural heritage. Applicants are sought who can develop and implement a statewide dance tour that will acquaint Coloradoans with the best of their cultural and artistic legacy, with performances that are artistically, historically and culturally significant and in some way highlights and celebrates the evolution of dance and choreography as it relates to Colorado. Proposed programs may focus solely on a particular choreographer, style, tradition, or subject area relevant to our state or region. The tour must include related educational and interpretive components.
