• Oct. 8: The Advocate Safehouse Project is taking applications for their next advocate volunteer training, which will begin Oct. 8. The free training will prepare volunteers to respond to calls received by the Advocate Safehouse Project's 24-hour Help Line. Classes include, but are not limited to: Dynamics of domestic violence, crisis intervention, listening skills, the legal system, Advocate Safehouse Project's Policies and Procedures and other community resources.

• Animal Rescue Foundation is a volunteer group in the Roaring Fork Valley that works to save the lives of dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that are abandoned, abused, surrendered or face euthanasia because of overcrowded shelters. The group has no shelter, so they plan and attend events throughout the valley to find homes for the pets. The group also holds fundraisers to help pay for boarding costs and medical expenses. • Deadline July 1, 2009 Masterpieces of Colorado Tour will fund a dance tour that celebrates Colorado’s unique cultural heritage. Applicants are sought who can develop and implement a statewide dance tour that will acquaint Coloradoans with the best of their cultural and artistic legacy, with performances that are artistically, historically and culturally significant and in some way highlights and celebrates the evolution of dance and choreography as it relates to Colorado. Proposed programs may focus solely on a particular choreographer, style, tradition, or subject area relevant to our state or region. The tour must include related educational and interpretive components. The Colorado Council on the Arts will award one grant between $50,000 to $55,000, which requires a one-to-one match, 50 percent of which must be in cash. To apply, go to coloarts.org.

The free 8-week program covers the basics of the medical field. High school students and mature middle school students interested in health care or medical school are encouraged to attend.
